YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The founders of Fieline Inc., Roger and Gloria Jones, have endowed two scholarships at Youngstown State University, Paul McFadden, president of the YSU Foundation, announced today.
The couple have long been generous supporters of YSU and other educational efforts in the Mahoning Valley, giving both their time and money. Fireline, based here, manufactures higher-performance ceramics.
Both scholarships, named in honor of the Joneses, are held by the YSU Foundation.
The Roger and Gloria Jones Scholarship for STEM students will be awarded to a student in the College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. The Roger and Gloria Jones Scholarship in Fine Arts will be awarded to a student majoring in one of the fine arts in the College of Creative Arts and Communication.
The Joneses have contributed to the STEM College, the College of Creative Arts & Communication, the Dana School of Music, the Friends of Music Scholarship, the YSU Foundation Reaching for Tomorrow’s Stars Scholarship, 88.5 WYSU-FM and the YSU English Festival.
Roger Jones, a veteran of the Korean War and recipient of the Bronze Star, earned a baccalaureate in ceramic engineering from Alfred University and came to the Youngstown area to head research and development for Dixon Crucible. He also is a sculptor, with one of his pieces featured on campus in the space between Tod Hall and the Butler Institute of American Art.
Gloria Jones earned her baccalaureate in biology and chemistry at Elmira College, one master’s degree in physiological chemistry at the University of Buffalo and a second in English at YSU. She taught English at YSU more than 20 years.
