EGCC Head Count Up 10%, Valley Center Up 26%
STEUBENVILLE, Ohio -- The final count of fall enrollment at Eastern Gateway Community College is 3,195, a 10% increase from last fall, the college announced Thursday. The jump is the largest -- and one of the few -- increases among community colleges in the state, according to officials.
The increase is the result of 7% more new students and a 12% increase in the retention rate. Patty Sturch, dean of enrollment management, reported that enrollment on the Jefferson Campus in Steubenville remained even.
“The college’s expansion site at the Valley Center in Youngstown had an overall enrollment increase of 26% from fall 2013,” Sturch said. “The majority of the students, 81%, attend the center from Mahoning County.”
About 30% of all students take at least one online classes. The college hopes to increase that percentage in the spring semester when self-paced online courses and online degree programs are to begin, Sturch said.
Separately, Eastern Gateway announced its board of trustees has agreed on the profile of the next president and signed off on it (CLICK HERE). The trustees want someone who will increase college participation and attainment; engage and support business and industry to foster economic leadership; maximize college access and affordability; build community college resources to promote access and quality learning; and be a good steward of finances.
Trustees re-elected John Gilmore of Steubenville as chairman, Larry Long of East Liverpool as vice chairman and Angela Mastros of Wintersville as secretary.
