Hilcorp Steps on the Gas at Poland Township Wells
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Hilcorp Energy Co. has stepped on the gas at its Carbon Limestone Landfill well pads in Mahoning County, resulting in strong production in the northern tier of the Utica shale, according to newly released data from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (READ RELATED STORY).
The ODNR third-quarter production report shows that Hilcorp's seven wells at the Carbon Limestone site in Poland Township collectively produced 1.7 billion cubic feet of natural gas.
Hilcorp's Poland CCL2 6H well alone produced 379.4 million cubic feet of gas over the 92-day period, ODNR records show. Two other wells at the same pad -- the 5H and 3H -- produced 360.2 million cubic feet and 352.7 million cubic feet of gas respectively.
Little or no oil was produced at any Poland well, the production report shows.
However, CNX Gas' Hendricks well in Ellsworth Township produced the most oil in Mahoning County, 9,677 barrels produced during the quarter, beating the Utica average of 4,471 barrels per well. The CNX well also produced 45 million cubic feet of gas.
CNX Gas' two other wells in Jackson Township reported no results.
Hilcorp's three top Poland Township wells surpassed the Utica average of 195 million cubic feet of gas, rivaling some of the more productive wells in Columbiana County, records show. They also easily outdistance wells in production further north in Trumbull County.
Halcon Resources Corp.'s Kibler 2-3H well in Lordstown was the most productive natural gas and oil well in Trumbull County during the quarter, ODNR reported. That well yielded 78.8 million cubic feet of gas, 2,816 barrels of oil.
Halcon's Kibler 1H well in Lordstown produced 57.7 million cubic feet of gas, while the company's Avalon 1H well yielded 48.4 million cubic feet.
Halcon and BP America suspended their drilling programs in the Utica last year because of poor well results.
In Columbiana County, wells drilled by Chesapeake Exploration LLC continue to demonstrate strength, ODNR records show.
Chesapeake's Albaneso well in Franklin Township was the top natural gas producing well in the county, yielding 452.3 million cubic feet. The Tritten well in Center Township, the subject of Gloria Tritten's “Field of View" column in The Business Journal, produced 431.6 million cubic feet of gas, while the Dye well in Center Township yielded 420.7 million cubic feet of natural gas.
Other strong wells in Columbiana County are the Andrulis well in Center Township, which produced 375.6 million cubic feet of gas, and the Crosser well, also in Center Township, which yielded 301.4 million cubic feet of gas.
While wells in the northern tier of the Utica show promise, the results pale when compared to some of the spectacular production numbers from wells in the southern portion.
Denver-based Antero Resources' Gary 3H well in Monroe County, for example, produced the most natural gas with 1.69 billion cubic feet the 90 days its was in production, and to date is the biggest producing natural gas well on record in Ohio, according to ODNR data.
Two other Antero wells drilled in Monroe County yielded more than one billion cubic feet of gas, according to ODNR data.
Other exploration companies are finding equally impressive reservoirs of natural gas in this region of the play, according to ODNR results.
Each of three of Gulfport Energy Corp.'s wells drilled in Belmont County produced more than one billion cubic feet of gas while HG Energy LLC's Whitacre well in Monroe County produced just over one billion cubic feet.
American Energy Utica LLC, a venture started by former Chesapeake Energy CEO Aubrey McClendon, reported its first results since the company entered the Utica about a year ago. Two wells American Energy drilled in Belmont County produced 948 million cubic feet of natural gas during the period, ODNR records show.
Just how much of this gas is natural gas liquids is undetermined because Ohio does not require companies to issue separate reports on natural dry gas and natural gas liquids production.
The highest-producing oil well in the state was Pittsburgh-based CNX Gas Co.'s Reserve Coal Properties Co. well in Noble County, ODNR reported, with 50,159 barrels of oil over 86 days of production.
Production from horizontal oil and gas wells across the state increased 49% during the third quarter compared to the second, according to ODNR.
Ohio's horizontal shale wells produced three million barrels of oil and 132 billion cubic feet of natural gas during the three months ended Sept. 30, ODNR said in a summary report.
During the second quarter, Utica wells produced 2.4 million barrels of oil and 88.6 billion cubic feet of natural gas.
Through November of this year, 627 horizontal permits have been issued. In 2013, 583 horizontal shale permits were issued, ODNR said.
