Downtown Nightclub Set to Open This Weekend
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- One year in the making, the downtown's newest nightclub, The Core, is set to open Saturday night. The Core, billed as an "upscale" dance club, is modeled after similar ventures in larger cities such as New York and Los Angeles, partner Bernard Marinelli said."This area doesn't really have an upscale club," Marinelli said. "We decided to go with something that's known more in larger metro areas."As such, the club will differ from the traditional tavern or bar, Marinelli added. "There are no televisions or pool tables, and no live entertainment," he said. Neon beer advertisements are also absent, giving the club a certain aesthetic appeal. To keep the theme of a metro-dance club, Marinelli and his two partners -- Bob Frederick Jr. and Don Bova Jr. -- leased 3,000 square feet on the first floor of the Wick Building in the heart of downtown. "We thought it would be great to do this downtown," he said. He expects The Core to employ 12 to 15 people. Construction crews have been busy outside the Wick Building the past month ripping up Federal Plaza to reopen Federal Street to through traffic -- a small inconvenience that should have little or no impact on business. "You couldn't park in front of the building anyway" when Federal Plaza was intact, he said.Once the street is finished, Marinelli thinks business will only improve because of the additional parking planned along Federal. The club officially opens at 7 p.m. Saturday. Regular hours will be from 7 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, and 4 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. Wednesday through Friday. The club will be closed Mondays and Tuesdays, Marinelli said.A ribbon cutting is scheduled for Friday, April 23, when the press will be invited on a walk-through tour. "We want to build a sense of curiosity," Marinelli commented. "
