Universal Stainless to Expand at North Jackson
NORTH JACKSON, Ohio – Universal Stainless & Alloy Products Inc. plans two additions totaling more than 24,000 square feet and valued at more than $1 million at its plant here.
Hively Construction, Canfield, filed with Jackson Township last week for industrial addition permits for a pair of maintenance buildings at Universal’s plant at 2058 S. Bailey Road, zoning office documents show. According to the documents, Universal wants to add a 15,120-square-foot building valued at $588,000 and a 9,477-square-foot building expected to cost $432,000.
A permit for the larger addition was approved. However, the company’s application for the smaller addition, to the west side of the VIM/VAR building, was denied because its height, at 49 feet, violates township zoning, requiring the company to seek a variance, said Christine Locke, township zoning inspector.
In June 2011, Universal, based in Bridgeville, Pa., announced it had acquired the plant, then still under construction as Patriot Special Metals, and completed the purchase in August.
"This acquisition is a major, transformative step for Universal, which redefines our position in the specialty steel industry, significantly broadens our production capabilities and product range in higher value, higher margin products, and enables our entry into new global market niches,” Dennis Oates, Universal chairman, president and CEO, said in a news release last summer. “It also substantially advances our ability to serve our customers and provide them with unparalleled service through reduced cycle and lead times.”
Attempts to reach Universal were unsuccessful.
