January Traffic Takes Off at Akron-Canton Airport
GREEN, Ohio -- Passenger traffic in January at the Akron-Canton Airport set another all-time record, with 126,000 passengers traveling to and from the airport during the month. The total was fueled by an 18% increase in traffic aboard AirTran Airways.
Strong growth aboard Frontier Airlines, Delta Air Lines and US Airways also contributed to the January increase, which is up 12.6% over January 2011 and the 10th consecutive record-breaking month for the airport.
"More and more customers are trying CAK," said Rick McQueen, president and CEO. "We hope to keep them coming back with our low fares and relaxing airport experience."
Passenger traffic was up on nearly all airlines that offer flights at the airport. AirTran Airways -- offering nonstop service to Orlando, Tampa and Ft. Myers, Fla., Atlanta, New York, Boston and Milwaukee -- is up 18%, McQueen noted. A new service to Denver will begin June 2 and Chicago Midway starts Aug. 12.
Frontier Airlines, with nonstop flights to Denver, was up 40% compared to last year.
Delta, flying to Atlanta and Detroit, was up 21%, and US Airways, with flights to Charlotte, Philadelphia and Washington D.C. (Reagan), posted a 9% increase.
Akron-Canton Airport's airfares are the 14th average lowest in the United States, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation, Bureau of Transportation Statistics. CAK 2018 , the airport's 10-year, $110-million capital improvement plan, is continuing. 2012 projects include a new aircraft rescue and firefighting maintenance facility and additional automobile parking, McQueen said.
