Passport Day Saturday at Canfield, Poland Post Offices
CLEVELAND -- Every Spring, the United States Postal Service supports the State Department’s “Passport Day in the USA” to encourage people planning to travel outside the USA not to wait until the last minute to apply for or to renew passports. This year, Passport Day in the USA 2012 will take place March 10.
Last year, nearly 65,000 passport applications were accepted during the one-day national event. Locally, two post offices are participating, as follows: Canfield Post Office, 1 to 3 p.m., Poland Branch Post Office, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Customers have the option of applying for a passport book, good for all international travel, or the passport card, which is less expensive but good only for land and sea travel between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean region and Bermuda, officials said, noting that U.S. citizens must present a valid passport book when coming back into the United States by air. U.S. citizens returning to the United States from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda at land borders and sea ports of entry must present a passport book, passport card, or other travel documents approved by the U.S. government.
Travelers are encouraged to apply for a passport several months before they are scheduled to travel overseas. A passport application normally is processed by the State Department within five to six weeks. However, for an additional fee, the application can be expedited and processed within three business days. For those who need speedy delivery, the U. S. Postal Service offers Express Mail next day delivery both to and from the State Department.
To help the passport application process, the Postal Service recommends bringing the following to the event: Proof of American citizenship (birth certificate, a previous U.S. passport, a certificate of citizenship or a naturalization certificate); proof of identity (previous U.S. passport, a naturalization certificate, a certificate of citizenship, a current valid driver’s license, government ID or military photo ID. A photocopy of the applicant’s ID (front and back) must be submitted with the application. For minors under 16, a photocopy of both parents ID must be submitted.
The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
