Commissioner Seeks Consensus on Bed Tax Flap
Friday, March 23, 2012YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Consideration of a proposed increase in Mahoning County’s bed tax to fund the Western Reserve Port Authority is on hold until mid-April, says county Commissioner Carol Rimedio-Righetti. That’s when she is trying to put together a meeting of commissioners of both counties, representatives of local economic development entities and the two counties’ convention bureaus to explore other options for funding the port authority as well as combining the tourism agencies.
Portman to 'Check Into' Kasich's Tax on Gas Drillers
Friday, March 16, 2012YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – U.S. Sen. Rob Portman told reporters Thursday he plans to “check into” Gov. John Kasich’s proposal to increase taxes on oil and gas companies in the state to pay for an income tax cut.
Portman, R-Ohio, who during a recent visit to TMK IPSCO’s Brookfield plant cautioned against the federal government getting in the way of development of the Utica and Marcellus shale plays, said he has not seen Kasich’s proposal to bring the tax on oil and natural gas up to 4%, which has already drawn a rebuke from the Ohio Oil and Gas Association.
Kasich Proposes Tax Hike on Drilling, Cut Income Tax
Thursday, March 15, 2012YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Gov. John Kasich formally announced Wednesday what has been suspected for the last week: the state will raise taxes on oil and natural-gas drillers to help subsidize an income tax cut for Ohio residents.
"We believe by modernizing our energy taxes, we can allow all 11.5 million Ohioans to benefit," Kasich said as part of his mid-biennium review proposal delivered in Columbus and streamed live on OhioChannel.org. "Every dime of the modernized severance tax would go into a dollar-for-dollar income tax cut."
