YSU's Penguin Review to Mark 50th Anniversary
Monday, November 10, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Penguin Review, Youngstown State University's student-run print magazine, will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a commemorative edition and a launch party Nov. 20. Penguin Review was created in 1964 to give YSU students an opportunity to share their talents with a wider audience.
Since the launch, more than 1,500 students have published poetry, art, fiction, screenplays and creative non-fiction in the Review. The magazine, which is released annually, has gone through many changes through the years.
Swanston Conference Gathers Youth Advocates
Friday, November 07, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Nearly 100 public officials, teachers, counselors, agency officials, social workers and others who work with at-risk children gathered Thursday today for a day-long session of information and inspiration.
“Innovations: Evolving Approaches to Youth Development” was presented at the D.D. and Velma Davis Education & Visitor Center of Mill Creek MetroParks by the William Swanston Charitable Fund, which works to improve the lives of at-risk children in the Mahoning Valley.
Graduates Praise Value of Emerging Leaders Program
Thursday, November 06, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- After 18 meetings since April 22, the Emerging Leaders program graduated its 2014 class Wednesday. The program, administered by the U.S. Small Business Administration at Youngstown State University, graduated 16 small-business people from around the Mahoning Valley.
Students were taught various business methods that covered a spectrum ranging from accounting to social media and marketing to how to handle personnel decisions.
VEC Donates $5K, Mentoring to Sister Jerome's Poor
Tuesday, November 04, 2014GIRARD. Ohio -- Valley Electrical Consolidated Inc. awarded a $5,000 grant to Sister Jerome’s Poor to sponsor a local college student as well as to provide mentoring for the student.
The check for sponsorship was presented to Sister Jerome Corcoran at VEC’s headquarters Oct. 31.
Upon graduating from Eastern Gateway Community College in June, Brianna Spatafore will continue her education at Youngstown State University. Tricia Ferry of VEC will mentor Spatafore during this time.
YSU Moves Up in Magazine's Rankings
Monday, November 03, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Youngstown State University ranks among the top 25% of similar universities and colleges nationally in Washington Monthly’s 2013 College Guide and Rankings, the university announced today.
The magazine’s rankings list schools based on the social mobility of their students, research and community service.
“Instead of lauding colleges for closing their doors to all but an elite few, we give high marks to institutions that enroll low-income students, help them graduate, and don’t charge them an arm and a leg to attend,” the magazine said.
