Manufacturers Name City as Training Center Location

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Proponents of an advanced manufacturing training center have identified Youngstown as the best location for the facility, and this week City Council will consider legislation supporting a grant application that would pay for a feasibility study.
The Mahoning Valley Manufacturers Coalition has been working for several years to identify specific skills gaps in manufacturing and at the advanced levels of career pathways, such as advanced machining and welding coursework, said Jessica Borza, MVMC’s executive director.
South Avenue Business Group Stresses Unity

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- A consortium of small business owners along the South Avenue corridor are calling for a unified effort to drive crime from the neighborhoods and create a more productive environment so these businesses can flourish.
The South Avenue Business Association will meet Jan. 21 at the Metro Assembly Church at 10 a.m., the group announced this week. All businesses on or around South Avenue are welcome to attend.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Shoppers will turn out in droves on Black Friday, continuing the upward trend of revenues for the biggest shopping day of the year. Last year, consumers across the country spent an estimated $12.3 billion on Black Friday.

Packed House Watches Return of Live Horse Racing

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio -- Were you to ask Robert Schmitz three years ago whether horse racing would thrive in the Mahoning Valley, or even throughout Ohio, he'd have given you slim odds.
"Horse racing was at the bottom of the barrel," says the chairman of the Ohio State Racing Commission. "We couldn't have gone any lower than what we were."
However, the passage of legislation approving video lottery terminals, or VLTs, to operate within these racinos proved a turning point for the industry, as evidenced Monday at Hollywood Gaming at Mahoning Valley Race Course, Schmitz said.
