YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Former Youngstown resident John Wendle will present an art talk and share images of Afghanistan Sunday, Jan. 20, at the Butler Institute of American Art.
The presentation at at 2 p.m. in the Beecher Center auditorium is free and open to the public, but seating is limited and is first-come, first-served.
Wendle is an independent photographer, reporter and videographer based in Kabul, Afghanistan. He writes for Time magazine and is represented by Polaris Images photo agency. His work has been featured in national and international media that include Time, The New York Times, The Times (of London), CNN, PBS, BBC and the United Nations.
Wendle has spent months in Afghanistan reporting and shooting photographs of, and alongside, Afghan and U.S. soldiers and marines in some of that country’s best known battlefields. He photographed the victims of the war, many bombings and many attacks around Kabul.

"John’s work extends a time-honored tradition of war reportage by American artists including Walker Evans (1903-1975) and Edward Steichen (1879-1973). His work is stunning.”
Wendle graduated in 2007 from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism, with specialized coursework in conflict reporting, business reporting and photojournalism.
Before attending Columbia, he was the deputy editor of the Caspian Business News in Baku, Azerbaijan, and served as a Peace Corps volunteer across the Caspian Sea in Aktau, Kazakhstan.
He is a 1998 graduate of Ursuline High School and attended the Montessori School of Mahoning Valley.
