YMCA Training Offered for Lifeguards, Instructors
BOARDMAN, Ohio -- The YMCA of Youngstown is looking to fill the growing need for qualified lifeguards through its training and certification classes. Time remains to register for the Y’s lifeguard training and certification classes scheduled for Feb. 26 through March 28.
The Y’s lifeguard training and certification program equips candidates with all necessary skills from first aid and CPR to leadership and teamwork. Candidates must pass a physical competency test that consists of swimming 300 yards, treading water for two minutes using legs only, a feet-first surface dive to 10 feet and swimming underwater 15 feet.
“Becoming a trained lifeguard offers vast employment opportunities at both local Y branches, Camp Fitch and [many swimming pools] in the area,” said Chris Hughes, aquatics director at the Davis Y.
The Davis Y also is offering swimming lesson instructor training and certification classes to interested individuals 16 years or older. Classes will be held Feb. 19 through March 28 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Program fee is $175 is $200.
The lifeguard training program will be held from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and is open to all individuals 16 years of age and older.
