Mellon Foundation Gives $4M to Grove City College
GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Richard King Mellon Foundation, based in Pittsburgh, has given Grove City College $4 million to build its science, engineering and mathematics building.
The gift was announced Tuesday by the president of Grove City, Richard G. Jewell, Class of 1967.
The Mellon Foundation had given $500,000 earlier toward construction of the 63,000-square-foot building scheduled to open in time for the fall semester. The building is part of the college’s $90 million capital campaign, “Grove City Matters.”
When the building is completed, Jewell said, his college “will substantially expand its academic offerings in science, engineering and mathematics. The new facility will offer expanded laboratory and study spaces that foster opportunities for collaborative interactions, similar to what students find in the workplace.”
Jewell hailed the foundation as “a generous benefactor, leaving a significant footprint on our campus, first with its support of the Wolf Creek Renovation project,” now with the building to house science, engineering and mathematics classrooms, labs and offices.
The architecture firm of Ballinger, based in Philadelphia, designed the building for which P.J. Dick of Pittsburgh is general contractor.
Grove City College is a small liberal arts college founded in 1876 that tries to provide a Christian environment for its students. Besides having a reputation for being academically challenging, it holds the distinction of accepting no government funding, whether direct or indirect.
