Forbes Magazine Includes YSU on Top Colleges List
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Forbes magazine has included Youngstown State University and four other schools in northeast Ohio on its list of America’s Top Colleges for 2013.
“To have YSU on the list of the nation’s top schools is an achievement worth noting and an accomplishment of which we can all be very proud,” YSU President Randy J. Dunn said. “Our students and alumni are well aware of YSU’s excellence; it’s gratifying to see that affirmed by a reputable, independent source such as Forbes.”
The rankings, developed by Forbes in partnership with the Washington, D.C.-based Center for College Affordability and Productivity, are based on a variety of measurements, including student satisfaction, post-graduate success, student debt and graduation rate.
While YSU ranks 638 on the list, Dunn noted that there are nearly 2,000 four-year universities and colleges in the nation, which means about two-thirds of the schools didn’t even make it into the rankings.
In all, Forbes lists 650 colleges and universities in the rankings. Also included on the magazine's list from northeast Ohio are the University of Akron (No. 585), Hiram College (No. 379,) Kent State University (No. 605), the University of Mount Union (No. 378).
U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan, D-13 Ohio, issued a statement congratulating all the region's schools for making the Forbes list. This is yet another example of how lucky we are in northeast Ohio to have such reputable institutions in our backyard that continue to achieve academic excellence day in and day out," he said. "These universities and colleges are paving that way forward for our children to contribute and build upon the advancements of our local region."
Ranked No.1 is Stanford University; Pomona College is ranked No. 2. It's the first time that two California schools have taken first and second place, Forbes says.
“Just to be included on the list means that we are among the top one-third of four-year institutions in the nation, which is something very much worthy of our attention,” Dunn said.
