Iron String's Sugar Plum Project Gets Façade Grant
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Façade work likely will get under way in March on the façade of the former Two Guys Clothing store building, where Iron and String Life Enhancement Inc. plans to open a luncheonette and bakery this summer.
Workers should finish gutting the interior of the building next week, said Jimmy Sutman, ISLE president. ILSE plans to open the Sugar Plum bakery/luncheonette in the space and create 25 part-time jobs over three years, according to city documents. ISLE provides day services for adults with disabilities at its Purple Cat and Golden String centers as well as the Touch the Moon Candy Saloon, around the corner from the proposed Sugar Plum.
The Youngstown Board of Control approved a $15,960 façade grant toward the estimated $39,900 cost of updating the storefront at its Thursday meeting. Sutman expects the project overall to cost from $250,000- to $300,000.
In December, the city’s Design Review Committee approved the plans for the exterior work prepared by Paul Hagman, project manager with Faniro Architects Inc.
Last year ISLE purchased the 107 W. Federal St. property, 4,200-square-foot building. ISLE plans to develop the second floor for apartments.
Beginning Monday, Sutman said he plans to have a crew on site daily doing interior and exterior work, depending on the weather. Once the interior gutting is completed, he will seek bids for the utility work on the project, probably in mid- to late February, he said.
One unanticipated piece of the project was adding support beams to replace a staircase that had been removed years ago. “That stairway was an important support for the building itself,” Sutman said. A temporary staircase has also been installed to allow access to the second level, he reported.
He anticipates a July opening for Sugar Plum.
