Applications Slow Down for Horizontal Well Permits
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Permitting activity for oil and gas exploration in the Utica/Point Pleasant shale formations in eastern Ohio nearly stopped during the week of Aug. 8, as the Ohio Department of Natural Resources issued just two permits for horizontal wells across the state.
One of those wells is planned for Columbiana County, the agency reports. ODNR issued a permit Aug. 16 to Chesapeake Exploration LLC for a new well at the Altenhof farm in Hanover Township, records show.
A second permit was also issued to Chesapeake for a new well in Carroll County, Perry Township, at the R. Miller property on Aug. 14, ODNR reported.
As of Aug. 17, the agency has issued 840 permits for new horizontal wells across the Utica play. Of that number, 505 wells are drilled and 125 of those wells are now producing, ODNR reported.
There were no new permits issued for wells in either Mahoning or Trumbull counties.
Meeanwhile, Halcon Operating Co., a division of Halcon Energy Corp., continues brisk permitting activity in western Pennsylvania, according to records provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.
The Pennsylvania DEP shows that Halcon was granted in August five new permits for horizontal wells in Mercer County.
Four of those wells are located in Otter Creek Township at the Reges pad, records show. A fifth well permit, issued on Aug. 12, is slated for the Phillips property in West Salem Township.
There were no new horizontal permits issued for nearby Lawrence County, DEP reported.
