GM Sales Up in January; Chevy Cruze Sales Down
YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO – General Motors Co. reported this morning that sales of new cars and trucks increased 16% in January compared to the same period last year.
But sales of the Lordstown-built Chevrolet Cruze, however, were down by 3.5% compared to last year, GM said. The Lordstown plant produced 21,274 new Cruzes during the month, according to production reports.
GM said that it sold 194,699 vehicles during January. The company also said that retail sales were up 24%.
Cruze deliveries totaled 14,524 new Cruzes during the month compared with 15,049 a year earlier, a drop of 3.5%.
"This year is off to a good start for General Motors," said Kurt McNeil, vice president of U.S. sales operations. "There's a sense of optimism among our dealers that only comes when you pair a growing economy with great new products."
Total Cadillac sales were up 47% and the brand recorded its highest January sales in 23 years, GM said, while year-over-year sales were 32% higher at Buick, 23% higher among GMC vehicles, while Chevrolet posted an 11% gain.
GM's top seller was the Silverado pickup truck with 35,445 units sold, a gain of 32% during the month, while the Chevrolet Equinox recorded 17,223 units sold in January, a 26% improvement.
Also Chrysler Group LLC reported its 34th consecutive month of sales gains. The automaker said it sold 117,731 new vehicles in January, a 16% increase over last year.
