Domestic Steel Shipments Rose in December, Fell in 2012
WASHINGTON -- In December 2012, U.S. steel mills shipped 7,483,120 net tons, a 1.2% increase from the previous month but 7.5% less than in December 2011, the American Iron and Steel Institute announced Tuesday.
Shipments for full year 2012 were 95,948,663 net tons, a 4.4% increase over 2011 shipments, according to the trade group.
Shipments in December were 6% below the 2012 monthly average of eight million net tons. While December shipments were the highest monthly quantity since the 8.4 million tons shipped in August, they were below all monthly totals in the first eight months of 2012.
A comparison of December shipments to the previous month shows the following changes: Hot rolled sheet, up 7%; hot dipped galvanized sheets and strip, up 1%; and cold rolled sheet, down 1%.
The American Iron and Steel Institute is composed of 25 member companies, including integrated and electric furnace steelmakers and 124 associate members that supply those 25 members and other customers of the steel industry.
