Beer Distributors Contribute $1.6B to Ohio Economy
ALEXANDRIA, Va. -- Beer distributors in Ohio retain 4,527 direct jobs and have $1.6 billion in economic impact, finds a report just released by the National Beer Wholesalers Association. When the effects of Ohio distributor operations, capital investment and community involvement are considered, the number of jobs affected is nearly 12,000.
The first-ever report, “America's Beer Distributors: Fueling Jobs, Generating Economic Growth & Delivering Value to Local Communities,” was written by Bill Latham and Ken Lewis, both Ph.D.’s, at the Center for Applied Business & Economic Research at the University of Delaware. It was released by the National Beer Wholesalers Association.
The report also quantifies the resources contributed by beer distributors in supporting community events and local economic development, contributing to charitable causes, promoting the responsible use of alcohol and adds the effects of these activities to distributor operations.
Other key findings:
- Ohio beer distributor activities pay $351 million in federal, state and local taxes. This excludes the $417 million they pay in federal, state and local alcohol excise and consumption taxes on beer sold in Ohio.
- The Ohio beer distribution industry contributes more than $1.1 billion in transportation efficiencies for the beer industry each year. The press release based on the report did not explain ”transportation efficiencies.”
- Beer distributor contributions to local community activities comes to $6.9 million annually.
"Fueling more than 345,000 direct and indirect jobs across the country, beer distributors add $54 billion to the nation's gross domestic product and offer far reaching benefits to brewers, importers, retailers, consumers and government agencies at all levels," Latham said.
"Distributors deliver economic benefits in their communities through local business-to-business commerce, investments in local infrastructure and capital assets and tax revenue," added Craig Purser, association president and CEO.
The National Beer Wholesalers Association represents the interests of America's 3,300 licensed, independent beer distributor operations in every state and media market in the country.
