Akron-Canton Sets All-Time Passenger Record in 2012
GREEN, Ohio -- Records were broken at every level last year at the Akron-Canton Airport. Not only was it the busiest year in the history of the airport, 2012 marked the third consecutive record-breaking year, Rick McQueen, president and CEO said Wednesday.
A total of 1,838,083 customers traveled to and from Akron-Canton during the year, bettering 2011 by more than 173,686 -- a 10.4% increase. In addition, the December was a record breaker with more than 173,686 total passengers, up 5% compared to December 2011. December also marked the 21st consecutive monthly increase.
“By every standard, 2012 was incredible for CAK," McQueen said. "A double-digit increase in traffic and welcoming Southwest [Airlines] make the year particularly memorable.”
Every carrier saw an increase in passengers for the year, including Southwest Airlines and AirTran Airways, now a wholly-owned subsidiary of Southwest Airlines, with 807,911 passengers, a 10% increase; Delta 353,583, a 9% increase; US Airways, 267,517, an 11% increase; Frontier Airlines, 199,400, up 7%; and United Express, 83,962 passengers, a 1% increase.
Lower airfares at Akron-Canton have saved travelers in northeastern Ohio $958 million in the last 16 years, McQueen said, when compared to fares at other airports. For the third consecutive year, CheapFlights.com ranked Akron-Canton as the 11th most affordable airport in the United States and the most affordable in Ohio.
