YSU Students, Volunteers Prepare Income Taxes
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Beginning Saturday, qualified students at Youngstown State University and other professional volunteers from the community will prepare income tax forms free of charge under the VITA program.
VITA stands for Volunteer Income Tax Assistance.
Tomorrow’s schedule is 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Besides benefiting those who use VITA, the program offers YSU students, mostly majors in accounting or business administration, hands-on experience, says Betty Jo Licata, dean of the Williamson College of Business Administration.
The income tax preparation is done in computer labs on the first floor of Williamson Hall, 221 N. Hazel St., on the southern boundary of the YSU campus. Walk-ins are welcome.
VITA offers free income tax assistance to taxpayers and the students and professionals evaluate the credits and deductions for which taxpayers might be eligible. Free electronic filing is available.
Those who visit Williamson Hall to take advantage of VITA should bring their wage and earnings statements (Form W-2) issued by their employers, interest-paid statements from banks, a copy of their last year’s return if available, and other relevant information about their income and expenses.
The schedule of later dates at Williamson Hall:
Feb. 9, 11, 16 and 23, March 2, 9, 23 and 30, April 13. All dates fall on a Saturday except Feb. 11, a Monday. All times are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. except Feb. 11 when the hours are 3:30 to 6 p.m.
Before they can participate, the students and other volunteers must complete an Internal Revenue Service training course in preparing income taxes.
