Second Harvest to Kick Off Harvest for Hunger Drive
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Second Harvest Food Bank will hold its 22nd annual Harvest for Hunger kickoff at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the food bank’s warehouse on Salt Springs Road.
The month-long food and funds drive takes place during March to help stock Food Bank shelves for the summer months when donations taper off and children are home from school.
Last year, Harvest for Hunger raised more than $160,000 and collected 41,000 pounds of food. All funds raised and food collected stay in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties to help feed Valley residents.
Those interested in participating in the campaign by conducting a food or funds drive to benefit the food bank should call Rita Brady at 330 792 5522, ext. 11, or visit this website to download a registration form.
Contributions can be made at Giant Eagle supermarkets and Sparkle Markets by tearing off a $1, $5 or $10 coupon at the register or dropping off a nonperishable food item at the front of the store. Monetary donations made at Giant Eagle and Sparkle Markets are added directly to the donor’s bill.
Among the 2013 Harvest for Hunger sponsors are Giant Eagle, WFMJ=TV 21 & WBCB, The Vindicator, Cumulus Radio Stations HOT 101, K-105 and Y-103 and Local 880 of the United Food and Commercial Workers.
The food bank distributes food to 153 hunger relief organizations in the tri-county area such as church pantries, homeless shelters and soup kitchens, shelters for battered women and after-school programs. In 2012, the food bank distributed nine million pounds of food, including two million pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables.
