Eastern Gateway, Hiram Get Dominion Foundation Grants
AKRON, Ohio -- Eastern Gateway Community College and Hiram College are among 12 Ohio institutions to get a share of $220,000 in Dominion Foundation Higher Education grants, Jeff Murphy announced Wednesday.
Murphy is managing director of commercial operations at Dominion Resources. The grants focus on programs intended to help prepare students for technical positions in Ohio's growing energy production and other industries.
The Dominion Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Dominion Resources, parent of Dominion East Ohio, was established to improve the physical, social and economic well-being of the communities Dominion companies serve, it says. Dominion and its foundation annually award more than $20 million to causes that protect the environment, promote education and help meet basic human needs.
The Ohio Higher Education grants are part of nearly $1.4 million in grants the Dominion Foundation is awarding this year to colleges and primary and secondary schools in states where Dominion does business: Ohio, Connecticut, Maryland, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia.
Eastern Gateway, Steubenville, received $20,000 to help with the purchase and installation of a virtual-reality arc welding trainer in its welding program. Students will learn how to weld in a safe environment and enhance their opportunities for succeed on tests for various welding certificates.
Hiram College, Hiram, received $30,000 for its "TREE" House: Energy-Smart Choices for Northeast Ohio Homeowners initiative. Students and faculty will renovate a two-story century-old house with energy-conserving materials and technologies, measure the energy savings, and invite residents of northeastern Ohio to visit it and learn and do the same through free hands-on community workshops.
Dominion is one of the nation's largest producers and transporters of energy. It has a portfolio of 27,000 megawatts of generation, 11,000 miles of natural gas transmission lines, gathering and storage pipeline and 6,400 miles of electric transmission lines.
