April 19 Event to Aid Manufacturers in Hiring
WARREN, Ohio -- Manufacturers are invited to a special informational session from 9 to 10:30 a.m. April 19 to learn how skills assessments and certifications can help them make better hiring and promotion decisions, reduce turnover and improve production and quality.
The session will be held at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center in Canfield.
Hosts are the Mahoning Valley Manufacturing Coalition and the Advanced Materials & Diversified Manufacturing Industry Partnership of Mercer and Lawrence Counties.
The session will focus on grant resources employers might qualify for that allow them to offset the costs of adopting new processes, and recruiting, hiring and promotion practices, officials said.
Participants will hear firsthand from other manufacturers that belong to The Manufacturing Coalition about solutions -- including ACT WorkKeys and the National Career Readiness Credential -- that should help them realize a greater return on investment. Aspects of this return are savings on human resources expense because they can more easily identify qualified candidates and validate their skills to do the job and write or improve their personnel manuals, says Jessica Borza, executive director of the coalition.
Manufacturers should leave the session with a good idea of the next steps to take to assess their employees’ skills and certifications they should have, Borza continued.
According to The Manufacturing Institute, the nonprofit affiliate of the National Association of Manufacturers, “Processes that worked 10 years ago to recruit and hire workers no longer a fit making the right choices and avoiding the turnover churn. Job descriptions often are outdated or not clear and applicants don’t understand the skills required for the positions. All these factors can lead to misunderstandings that do not emerge until well into the hiring and promotional process.”
The Mahoning Valley Manufacturers Coalitionwas formed to provide a network for Mahoning Valley manufacturers to share ideas and resources to promote development of a skilled workforce. Founding members include Ajax Tocco Magnethermic, BOC Water Hydraulics, Brilex Industries, Butech Bliss, City Machine Technologies, Compco Industries, Falcon Foundry, Girard Machine, Glunt Industries, Howland Machine, Kiraly Tool & Die, M-7 Technologies, SES Inc., Specialty Fab, Starr Manufacturing, Summer Garden Food Manufacturing, Taylor Winfield Technologies, V&M Star and Warren Screw Machine.
