400 Volunteers Ready for Friday's 'Day of Caring'
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The 16th annual United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley Day of Caring, sponsored by Covelli Enterprises, take place tomorrow with a kick-off with a breakfast at the Covelli Centre. The event will involve nearly 400 volunteers from 46 area companies who will participate by completing tasks, odd jobs, and organizing activities for 30 nonprofit organizations. Projects may consist of painting, construction, landscaping, cleaning or home repairs.
The Day of Caring not only helps local agencies to complete much-needed tasks, but it provides volunteers with an opportunity to see first-hand how these agencies work to meet the needs of the community, says Bob Hannan, president of the United Way chapter. It is also the start of the 2013 campaign. Becky Wall, vice president of Dearing Compressor & Pump Co., is chairing the campaign.
The results of the United Way Pacesetter Campaign will be announced at the breakfast event, and a check will be presented from the GM Foundation.
The United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley distributes funds for more than 70 programs that its 34 partnering agencies oversee. The agency also funds Success By 6, which provided a pre-kindergarten summer readiness program this summer to 600 children in 18 local school districts.
