YNDC Honors King's Memory with Cleanup

YOUNGSTOWN -- People occupy and keep up most of the houses that surround Taft Elementary School, but the 11 that concern residents of this South Side neighborhood sit empty with broken windows and missing doors.

“We did a survey of the area directly around Taft Elementary and found that a lot of these houses are blown-in with a lot of drug activity, gang activity and even prostitution, says Anika Jacobs-Green, a revitalization volunteer with AmeriCorps. “We're just trying to make it safe for these kids to walk to school.”

Oh Wow! Adds 2 Members to Center's Board of Directors

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Oh Wow! The Roger & Gloria Jones Children’s Center for Science & Technology has added two new members to its board, the executive director, Suzanne Barbati, announced today. They are Patrick Chovan, president of Omega Inc., and Greg Sturrus, interim dean of the College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics at Youngstown State University.

Additionally, Oh Wow! recognized the efforts of two founding members, Martin Abraham, interim provost at YSU, and Bruce Sherman, co-owner of Sherman Creative Promotions Inc., a past board chairman.

Midlife Chryslers to Headline 1st Tap at the Pack April 18

WARREN, Ohio -- The Midlife Chryslers featuring Michael Stanley will headline Tap at the Pack, Sunrise Entertainment and Packard Music Hall announced this morning. The inaugural beer-tasting event, which will feature hundreds of brews, will take place April 18.

The beer tasting will feature hundreds of brews and have a VIP session and a general admission session. “It will be a unique event that will feature great music, delicious cuisine, and of course, all of your favorite types of beer!” said Ken Haidaris, event organizer. “It will be an exciting day at the Packard Music Hall!”

Private Mail See Processors Slower Service, Higher Costs

YOUNGSTOWN -- Six months before the mail processing center at the Youngstown Post Office downtown closes, private mail processors say already they see longer delivery times.

Paul Mahin, mail specialist and consultant for City Printing, says his company used to get “exceptional service” when it mailed letters and packages to destinations within the city. Now, letters take two days and packages even longer to arrive.

Butler Acquires Sculpture of Martin Luther King Jr.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The Butler Institute of American Art has purchased a 300-pound bronze sculpture of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The three dimensional portrait was created by sculptor John Wilson in 1982 as a maquette (prototype) for an eight-foot bronze sculpture of the same subject installed in October 1983, in Martin Luther King Jr. Park in Buffalo, N.Y.

Ohio Business Filings at Record Level in 2014

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- During 2014, 93,775 new businesses filed to do business in Ohio, reports Secretary of State Jon Husted.

The number of new entities filing with the state in 2014 surpassed 2013’s total of 89,735, and represented the fifth consecutive year that Ohio saw a record number of new entities filing to do business here. Husted attributes the growth to the expanded services his office has implemented, most notably the launch of online services.

Ohio Pet Foods Inc., a co-packer and brand manufacturer of premium pet food that ships its products worldwide, recently completed a $2 million expansion and upgrade at its complex here and expects business to thrive this year.

“We’re up by double digits,” says Matt Golladay, vice president of Blackwood Pet Foods, the brand of the parent company.
